The annual St. Alfred Parish Fall Festival is today, tomorrow and Sunday.

The festival can be found on Telegraph Road one block south of Wick Road.

There will be catered dinners by Halina's, raffles, games of chance, kiddie games, midway rides, ethnic food, face painting and more.

The St. Francis Xavier Church Festival is from 6 p.m. to midnight today, noon to midnight tomorrow and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday at 4250 W. Jefferson, Ecorse.

There will be bingo, kids' gams, raffles, Vegas games, music, dancing and American, Mexican and Polish food.

The Ford Amateur Astronomy Club, Henry Ford Community College and the University of Michigan-Dearborn are sponsoring an Astronomy Day event tomorrow.

Daytime activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Henry Ford Community College, 5100 Evergreen Road, Dearborn. Nighttime activities will be from 7:45 p.m. until midnight at the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Evergreen Road, immediately south of the HFCC campus.

There will be planetarium shows of the fall sky, walking tours of a scale model of our solar system, solar viewing through properly filtered telescopes (weather permitting), "Make & Take" craft projectsfor kids, as well as views of the moon (arrive early), Jupiter and more, weather permitting.

The third annual "Paddle By Your Refuge" takes place from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday at Elizabeth Park in Trenton.

Experience the natural beauty and rich history of Elizabeth Park and the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge by kayak.

"Paddle By Your Refuge" features both kayak instruction on the tranquil waters of the Elizabeth Park canal and intermediate tours along the Detroit River to Humbug Marsh and Island.

All kayakers will receive a compass, emergency whistle, plastic map holder and a copy of the Detroit Heritage River Water Trail map.

An interpreter from Huron-Clinton Metroparks will also be on hand, providing those on the Humbug Marsh tour with an in-depth introduction to the area and the diverse wildlife that calls the marsh home.

Feel a little like Dr. Doolittle at "Bird Babble: Going Beyond Song Identification" at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Oakwoods Metropark Nature Center.

Identifying birdcalls can be fun, but interpreting their meanings can open up a whole new world. There is a $2 fee per person.

Take an Autumn Canoe Tour at noon and 2 p.m. Sunday. Paddle along in the 34-foot, 18-passenger Voyageur on its final trips of the year. There is a $3 fee.

The city of Woodhaven's Harvest Moon Festival takes place from 3 - 11 p.m. today and 8:30 a.m. - 11 p.m. tomorrow at Woodhaven Civic Center Park on Hall Road between West and Van Horn roads.

Highlights include a Texas Hold 'Em tournament, the Whispering Pines Animal Kingdom, a fire and tornado house, hayrides, inflatable rides, business and civic organization kiosks, a food and beer tent and lots of entertainment.

There will be a laser light show, courtesy of Hennessey Engineers, at 10 p.m. each night.

Lake Erie Metropark, one of the premier hawk watching sites in North America, will host the "18th Annual Hawkfest," a two-day celebration of the annual fall migration of birds of prey -- hawks, eagles, falcons, owls and vultures — from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday.

Festival highlights include a "Hawkfeast" breakfast from 9 - 10 a.m. Sunday, guest speakers, hawk ID workshops, live birds, educational games, exhibits, an art display and a "kids' kraft korner."

On Sunday, Reg Pettibone's Native American Hawk Dancers will perform traditional "eagle dances."

Hawk watchers will be counting migrating raptors, and their spotting scopes can be used to take a peek at birds.

Celebrate one of Downriver's natural jewels, Elizabeth Park, at the annual "Somewhere in Time," from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Look back at life Downriver in 1919, when Elizabeth Park was formed. Take historic boat tours on the Diamond Jack, take a "Walk through Automotive Time" and view vintage automobiles.

If two wheels are more your speed, be sure to stop by the antique bicycle display. And if it's the roar of the steam engine that fits your fancy, antique model trains will be on display in the shelter building.

Take part in or watch an old-fashioned horseshoe blind doubles tournament. There also will be an arts and crafts show, a farmers' market, a bake sale, old-time games and contests, old-fashioned children's games, entertainment and pony rides to add to the nostalgia of the early 1900s.

Kick off a colorful autumn season at the "Fall Festival" from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Nature Center of Oakwoods Metropark near Flat Rock.

Visit with local artisans as you stroll through the Monroe Art League exhibit area, listen to live music or try your hand at climbing the rock wall.

Kids will love the petting zoo, games, crafts, cider pressing and other activities.

There will be a fee of $2 per person for the rock climbing and donations will be accepted for the crafts.

Continue autumn's splendor into the evening at the "Evening Fireside Program" at 6 p.m. with music, stories, skits, cider and s'mores around a relaxing campfire. There will be a fee of $3 per person for the campfire program.

The Polka Booster Club of America celebrates its 40th anniversary with a dance Sept. 23 at the Robert Jones K of C Hall, 25160 W. Outer Drive, Lincoln Park.
