September, 2007 - - The Student Driver Band and NoResolve.org Present: BREAKING THE SILENCE: A Benefit Concert for Suicide Prevention and Awareness
NoResolve.org Chairman and Founder Dennis Liegghio lost his father to suicide when he was 14 years old. After more than a decade of struggling with depression from this tragic loss he made a choice to turn his life around. He decided to find a way to help others. He wrote a song called No Resolve and formed the Student Driver Band. Dennis soon was invited to perform his song at local Survivors of Suicide chapter meetings and events. He felt fortunate to become more involved with his community.
However he quickly decided this wasn't enough - so he created the nonprofit organization NoResolve.org and is currently developing a first class benefit/event: Breaking the Silence... complete with a sit down dinner, premium open bar, a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle and most importantly - live music, featuring Student Driver Band (Detroit), Robbie Conaway (Chicago) and Liz Stahler (Boston). This will not be a somber event; but rather a celebration of life, in memory of those we love and honor, but have tragically lost to suicide.
Featured Guest Speaker: Bev Cobain
Bev Cobain of Living Matters is a Registered Nurse, with credentials in psychiatric/mental health nursing. Her own struggle with depression and the suicides of three family members, most recently the 1994 death of her young cousin, Kurt Cobain, front man for the band Nirvana, ignited a passion in Bev to educate professionals, lay persons, and youth about depression and the significant public health issue of suicide. Her desire to educate resulted in her writing the acclaimed book, "When Nothing Matters Anymore: A Survival Guide for Depressed Teens", published in 1998; and developing the Living Matters web site to provide an additional avenue to share her knowledge and experience of youth depression and suicide.
Ms. Cobain is a nationally recognized speaker, educator, and workshop leader on the issues of youth depression awareness and suicide prevention/intervention. She was recently presented with the 2001 Youth Suicide Prevention Award for the State of Washington by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's Northwest Chapter. In addition Ms. Cobain has been the recipient of the National Mental Health Association's Green Ribbon Award recognizing her efforts on behalf of youth depression awareness.
