If you're seeking a place that offers a winning trifecta of good food, live music and a pleasant atmosphere you need look no further than Chatters of Westland.
They bill themselves as the "Talk of the Town". It's for good reason because there's always something going on.
There is karaoke Sundays through Thursdays and live bands on Fridays and Saturdays. Add a nice selection of video games, darts, nine-large screen televisions and some of the best food in town and you can't go wrong.
"We're a blue collar restaurant with gourmet food," said Peter Provenzola, owner of 16-years. "We've got all-you-can-eat crab legs on Thursdays and Saturdays, jumbo shrimp, steaks and salads. But we've also got your typical bar burgers and sandwiches too. It looks like a neighborhood bar but we really have top-of-the-line gourmet-style food at a reasonable price."
Chatters features some of the finest live entertainment in the metro Detroit area. Two bands in particular that have become perennial favorites at the club are Tommy C and Detroit Rock City and The Ride.
"Tommy C has opened for name acts like the Hollies and the Animals," Provenzola said. "I consider The Ride to be one of the metro area's best bands. They do a lot of Journey material. My cousin, Ross Valory, is Journey's bass player. He and the lead singer for The Ride are very good friends."
Currently, Chatters is riding a wave of resurgence that is blanketing the city of Westland and its environs. It is indeed a town on the grow.
"Westland is growing at a very fast rate," he said. "Ruby Tuesday's, Max and Erma's, Red Robin and us are all part of that growth spurt. The city officials are recognizing this and are helping small business owners to come along and do their thing."
The friendly and soft spoken proprietor, chef and band booking agent may be enjoying the fruits of his labor but is quick to pay homage and give respect to those who came before.
"The Studio Lounge used to be down the street and were very well known for live music," Provenzola said.
"Sam, the owner, was a friend of mine and many of the people that played there and even gained some fame along the way are now playing over here. Not that we're better or anything like that, but we sort of picked up where the Studio Lounge left off."
In these trying economic and socially disruptive times it's nice to know you can go to a place that is unpretentious, comfortable, safe and makes you feel right at home.
"We have a mature and a good mixed crowd," concluded Provenzola. "Sports, food and music all combine for a great night out. If you really wanna get out and let off some steam this is the place!"
