MUSIC TO YOUR EARS



Willow Metropark's Summer Music Series continues today with Boogie Dynamite and The Hits from 5 to 11 p.m. with a break for fireworks near the pool complex at the park in Huron Township.

"Polka Fest" featuring Big Daddy Lackowski and Duane Malinowski will take the stage from 6 to 10 p.m. July 19.

At 6 p.m. July 24, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra will perform, and from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 2, Kaleidoscope will play its renditions of Top 40 hits.

All music programs are free, but a vehicle permit is required for entry to the park. Cost is $4 a day or $20 for the year. Call 1-800-477-3182 or 1-734-697-9181 for more information.

The vocal stylings of Barry VanEngelen will be in the spotlight at 7 p.m. Sunday as part of the "Concerts on the Commons" at the Macomb Street Commons, Macomb at Meridian, Grosse Ile.

A feature called "Spotlight on Youth" invites young musicians to perform for five minutes at each show.

The free concerts are held Sundays throughout the summer. Bring your own lawn chair.

The City of Lincoln Park's annual summer concert series is in full swing with free weekly concerts from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursdays at the band shell in Memorial Park.

Bring a lawn chair or a blanket. In the event of rain, the concerts will move indoors.

The big band sounds of Swing Shift are on tap Thursday, followed by Gaelic folk trio Inis-Ceol on July 17; the 1950s and '60s music of The Bel-Airs on July 24; polka and standards from Zak Music on July 31; and The Diplomats with swing and 1960s music on Aug. 7.

In celebration of the Huron-Clinton Metroparks' 20th anniversary, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra will perform at 8 p.m. July 24 at Willow Metropark in Huron Township as part of the "Target Harmony in the Metroparks" series.

DSO resident conductor Thomas Wilkins will lead the orchestra in a variety of light classical and pops music centered on a dance theme.

Concertgoers should bring their own blankets or chairs. Picnic baskets are allowed, but glass containers aren't. Food will be available at concession areas.

The family friendly concerts are free, but require a $4 vehicle entry permit to the park.

The 23rd annual Michigan State Championship Old-Time Fiddlers Contest will be at 10 a.m. Oct. 4 during the Huron Township Applefest, 37283 Huron River Drive, New Boston.

Contestants will be judged on tempo, intonation, expression and repertoire. There is a $10 entry fee.

First prize earns $300, second prize is $200 and third prize is $100.
