EVAN ALMIGHTY —Newly elected to Congress, preening newscaster Evan Baxter (Steve Carell) leaves Buffalo behind and moves his family to northern Virginia. Once there, his life gets turned upside-down when God (Morgan Freeman) appears and anoints him to accomplish a holy mission of biblical proportions. Rated PG (Universal Pictures). MJR, AMC

1408 — In this Steven King story, novelist Mike Enslin (John Cusack) published a string of best sellers discrediting paranormal events in the most infamous haunted houses and graveyards around the world. Then he checks into suite 1408 of the Dolphin Hotel for his latest project, "Ten Nights in Haunted Hotel Rooms." Defying the warnings of the hotel manager (Samuel L. Jackson), the author is the first person in years to stay in the reputedly haunted room. Another best seller may be imminent, but first he must go from skeptic to true believer and survive the night. BLADES OF GLORY — Rival figure skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) are stripped of their medals and banned from the sport after fighting at the world championships. Three-and-a-half years later, they've found a loophole that will allow them to compete in pairs figure skating. Rated PG-13 (Paramount Pictures). AP

DINOSAURS ALIVE! 3D — From the sand dunes of Mongolia's Gobi Desert to the sandstone buttes of New Mexico, the film follows American Museum of Natural History paleontologists as they explore some of the greatest dinosaur finds in history. IMAX

FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER — Marvel's first family of superheroes, The Fantastic Four, meets their greatest challenge yet as the Silver Surfer comes to Earth to prepare it for destruction. The quartet must unravel the mystery of the Silver Surfer and confront the return of their mortal enemy, Dr. Doom, before all hope is lost. HOSTEL 2 — Three young American women studying in Rome set off for a weekend trip when they run into a model from one of their art classes who invites them to a weekend of relaxation. HURRICANE ON THE BAYOU — Viewers go on a breathtaking tour of the Louisiana bayou and the city of New Orleans, a place overflowing with life, music and natural beauty. IMAX

KNOCKED UP — Allison Scott (Katherine Heigl) is an up-and-coming entertainment journalist on the fast track. Her plans get seriously derailed when a drunken one-nighter with slacker Ben Stone (Seth Rogen) results in an unwanted pregnancy. Ben learns that he has a big decision to make with his kid's mom-to-be, whether to hit the road or stay in the picture. Also stars Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann. Rated R (Universal Pictures). MJR, AMC

MR. BROOKS — Earl Brooks (Kevin Costner) has it all — a loving wife (Marg Helgenberger), a devoted daughter, community standing and a thriving business. Mr. Brooks, however, lives a secret life as a notorious serial murderer. Although recently inactive, he is urged on by his evil alter ego, Marshall (William Hurt), and murders an unsuspecting couple. A photographer (Dane Cook), though, catches him on film and blackmails him with a bizarre demand. His last crime also unleashes a tenacious detective (Demi Moore) driven to solve the identity of the killer. Rated R (MGM). MJR, AMC

NANCY DREW — Nancy Drew (Emma Roberts), the resourceful teen detective, leaves her hometown of River Heights for the West Coast and Hollywood High, where her unique personal style sets her apart from her self-absorbed, fast-living peers. In no time at all, she gets a lead on one of the greatest unsolved cases of all time — the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of famous actress Dehlia Draycott. It happens that the Drews are staying in the former Draycott mansion, long reputed to be haunted. Also stars Tate Donovan and Josh Flitter. Rated PG (Warner Bros.). MJR, AMC

OCEAN'S THIRTEEN — Ruthless casino owner Willy Bank (Al Pacino) double-crosses one of Danny Ocean's (George Clooney) friends, landing him in a hospital bed in critical condition. Bank may have taken down one of the original Ocean's Eleven, but he left the others standing and, worse for him, gave them a shared purpose — to take Bank down on the night of the grand opening of his new casino. Also stars Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Bernie Mac, Don Cheadle, Ellen Barkin and Andy Garcia. Rated PG-13 (Warner Bros.) MJR, AMC

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END — Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) are allied with Capt. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) in a desperate quest to free Capt. SHREK THE THIRD —When Shrek's (the voice of Mike Meyers) father-in-law, King Harold (John Cleese), suddenly dies, he becomes king of Far Far Away. With the help of his trusted companions, Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss In Boots (Antonio Banderas), the ogre seeks out the most promising candidate, Fiona's (Cameron Diaz) cousin, Artie (Justin Timberlake), a high school slacker. SPIDER-MAN 3 — Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) has finally managed to strike a balance between his devotion to M.J. (Kirsten Dunst) and his duties as a superhero. When Peter's suit suddenly turns jet-black, his powers are enhanced and he is transformed, bringing out the dark, vengeful side of his personality. SURF'S UP — In this animated comedy, teenage Rockhopper penguin Cody Maverick (voice of Shia LaBeouf) is an up-and-coming surfer who enters his first pro competition on Pen Gu Island. When he comes face-to-face with a washed-up old surfer, Geek (Jeff Bridges), Cody discovers that a true winner isn't always the one who comes in first. 28 WEEKS LATER — In this sequel to "28 Days Later," six months have passed since the virus wiped out London. British citizens are now returning to District One as part of an American military project to repopulate and restart the city. WAITRESS — Jenna's (Keri Russell) secret ambition is to save enough money from her waitressing job to leave her overbearing and controlling husband (Jeremy Sisto).
