Tomorrow is Doggone Kids Day at Lake Erie Metropark

The Rock-N-Roll K-9s will amaze everyone with their tricks. The main event will be the "Grand Prix Racing," with dogs of all sizes shapes and ages running through, around and under obstacles while golden oldies play in the background. Shows will be at 1 and 3 p.m.

There will also be several pet-related organizations on hand with pet health and care information and adoption opportunities. The exhibit area will open at noon. Dogs on leashes are welcome.

Lake Erie Metropark gets the weekend off to an early start with the Crack O' Dawn Coffee Club at 7 a.m. tomorrow at the Marshlands Museum and Nature Center. Have coffee and donuts then work it off with a walk. There is a $2 fee per person.

At 2 p.m. Sunday, Make it at the Marsh participants will work on insect pole nets and screen cases in time for summer. There is a $5 fee per person. Advance registration is required for each program. Call 1-800-477-3189 or 1-734-379-5020.

The Downriver Council for the Arts, 20904 North Line Road, Taylor, is offering two origami workshops for students ages 10 through adults from 9:30 - 11 a.m. tomorrow and June 16.

Instructor Elizabeth Belcher will lead these classes in the ancient art of paper folding, which began in China in the first or second century, then became a popular art form in Japan in the sixth century.

The workshop fee is $10 for one session or $18 for both sessions. Materials are included in the fee. Parents are welcome to attend with their children. For more information or to register, call 1-734-287-6103. Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted.

The sixth annual Masco Art in the Park Festival takes place tomorrow and Sunday at Heritage Park in Taylor.

The event features a juried art fair, a student art exhibit and quality crafters selling a wide variety of their work.

Entertainment tomorrow includes The Troubadours, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Superball, 3 to 6 p.m.; and Men in Black, 7 to 11 p.m.

On Sunday, Downriver children take over the Main Stage, with the children's baking competition from 11 a.m. to noon, the children's talent competition from 12:30 to 4 p.m. and Taylor Ballet Americana and the Taylor Dance Program performing from 4 to 5 p.m.

The third annual "Cruisin' for the Arts" is scheduled for noon to 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Taylor Sportsplex, 13333 Telegraph.

Drivers should start lining up for the cruise portion of the show at noon at the Sportsplex. Starting at 1 p.m., the cars will cruise through midtown Taylor on Goddard Road, ending up in Heritage Park where they will be on display from 2 to 6 p.m. An awards ceremony will take place at 4 p.m.

Advance vehicle registration is $8. Registration the day of the cruise is $10. Proceeds benefit the Taylor Friends of the Arts and the Taylor Cultural Arts Commission.

Spend time with Dad at Oakwoods Metropark and Lake Erie Metropark this Fathers Day, June 17.

At Oakwoods Metropark, send Dad up a river with a paddle on a Father's Day Canoe Tour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Help paddle the 34-foot, 18-passenger "Huron" through the park's quiet backwaters.

Guided tours of the U.S. Brig Niagara -- a replica 1813 tall warship -- will be given from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 16 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 17 in the Port of Monroe.

The tall ship's visit is one of the Monroe County Historical Society's major events to raise awareness of the upcoming War of 1812 Bicentennial. The Niagara, built in 1988, is a reconstruction of the warship aboard which Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry won the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813 during the War of 1812.

The cost is $5 per person. Children age 5 and under will be admitted for free. All of the proceeds of the Niagara's visit will be dedicated to the development of Monroe's River Raisin Battlefield site and events to celebrate the upcoming War of 1812 Bicentennial.

Kennedy Recreation Center, 3101 West Road, Trenton, is accepting team registrations for its seventh annual Trenton Tim Horton's 3-on-3 Ice Hockey Tournament to be held July 27 and 28.

The tournament is for Mite, Squirt, Pee Wee and Bantam divisions. Each team will consist of four skaters and a goalie, with three skaters and the goalie from each team on the half sheet of ice at any one time.

Games will consist of two 10-minute periods. Each team will play a minimum of four games in the tournament.

Registration is $275 per team, which includes a tournament T-shirt for every player. Awards will be given to the first-place team in each division. In addition, players may enter into a skills competition. Events include fastest skater and showdown.

The Irish Cultural Forum is holding the 20th annual James Joyce Celebration from 5 - 9 p.m. Thursday at The Gaelic League, 2068 Michigan Ave., Detroit.

The event marks "Bloomsday," the day Leopold Bloom, the hero of Joyce's "Ulysses," sets out on his daylong journey through the streets of Dublin.

The celebration includes readings from Joyce's works, recitations from the audience and traditional Irish music.

The ninth annual Motor City Harley Davidson Harleyfest will take place June 16 at Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights.

HarleyFest is an exciting all-day event that brings together Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts from throughout the state to celebrate great music, great food and great bikes. Bikers and non-bikers are welcome.

Admission to the festival is always free and will feature a live music stage featuring some of Detroit's hottest local bands. In addition, there will be a "Best of Bike" show for prizes in various categories, a vendor village featuring everything from clothes and jewelry to airbrush artistry, plus lots of delicious food and drink, live auctions featuring autographed memorabilia, a day-long live broadcast by WRIF and more.

Gates will officially open at 11 a.m.

In addition, there will be a special Harley-Davidson "Rock-n- Roll Ride for Kids," starting from Motor City Harley-Davidson, 34900 Grand River Ave., Farmington Hills, to Freedom Hill County Park. Sign-up begins at 9 a.m. The ride will leave for HarleyFest, accompanied with a police escort, at 11 a.m. sharp. Riders are asked to pay $25 per person to participate in the ride, which provides them with a special Rainbow Connection collector's pin, parking fees for HarleyFest and a donation to The Rainbow Connection. "Our Body: The Universe Within," an eye-opening and educational exhibition of actual human bodies and organs, is making its Midwest debut at The New Detroit Science Center, 5020 John R St.

Including approximately 20 bodies and 135 other anatomical displays, the exhibit exposes the inner workings of human anatomy by presenting actual human specimens, reproductions of historic anatomical artwork and much more.

In an artful, compelling and dignified environment, guests will be able to connect with the human artifacts on a personal level that will help them to better understand their own bodies.

The exhibition has been held over through Sept. 3. Tickets are $24.95 for adults, $22.95 for seniors and $19.95 for children. The cost includes Science Center general admission. Children ages 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Visitors can add the IMAX Dome Theatre film "The Human Body" for an additional $3 for adults and $2 for children and seniors with the purchase of a ticket to "Our Body: The Universe Within." Advance tickets are available at www.detroitsciencecenter.org.

Heritage Decorative Artists of Southeast Michigan, a chapter of the International Society of Decorative Painters, meets bimonthly at the Westfield Activities Center, 2700 Westfield Road, Trenton.

Preservation Wayne is again offering walking tours through five historic districts of Detroit.

The tours take place at 10 a.m. Saturdays. Tours include downtown, the Eastern Market, midtown, auto heritage and the Cultural Center. Tours of the New Center are available by appointment.

Each tour costs $10 and takes two to three hours, looking at the area's past and present.

There are also Tuesday After Work Walking Tours at 5:30 p.m. starting from the Hotel Pontchartrain, 2 Washington Blvd. Each focuses on a different aspect of downtown — skyscrapers, restaurants and bars, sculptures and fountains or the buildings of Albert Kahn and Louis Kemper.

The evening tours are also $10 and take about two hours.

See the birthplace of the Model T with a tour of the historic Ford Piquette Avenue Plant, 461 Piquette, Detroit.

Walk the same floors as Henry Ford, the Dodge brothers, James Couzens and other auto pioneers, where the first 10,000 Tin Lizzies were manufactured before the advent of the assembly line.

A National Historic Landmark, the Ford Piquette Avenue plant is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the first and third Saturdays of every month through October. Admission is $10, with free admission for ages 16 and under.
