IslandFest 2008 starts today and continues through Sunday at the Grosse Ile Airport and other island sites with a carnival, aviation attractions, a fish fry, a classic car show, live entertainment and more.

Fireworks are set for 10 p.m. today. A pancake breakfast, a parade down Macomb Street, youth jazz festival, live crab races, kart races, flea market and more are on tap during the weekend of fun.

The Guidance Center will present Movie Night at 6:30 p.m. today at its Center for Excellence, 13111 Allen Road, Southgate, as part of Mental Health Awareness Month.

The movie showing is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" starring Jack Nicholson will be on the screen.

A "Shell-A-Bration" will take place tomorrow at Lower Huron Metropark's new Turtle Cove Family Aquatic Center, which opened last week.

The event will take place from noon to 4 p.m., and will include face painters, a child-friendly disc jockey and a chance to be photographed with SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer.

Guests also will be able to meet Ricky the Turtle, register for prizes and enjoy a beach party at the park, which is near Belleville.

The aquatic center is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The cost to get in is $8 for adults and $6 for children 30 to 47 inches tall.

Children less than 30 inches tall get in free. After 5 p.m., the cost is $5 for all. A vehicle entry permit also is required. The cost is $4 a day or $20 a year. For more information, call 1-734-697-9181.

A leisurely walk through Oakwoods Metropark near Flat Rock will feature "Wildflowers of Oakwoods" at 10 a.m. tomorrow. The fee is $3.

Enjoy "Birding by Canoe" from 8 to 11 a.m. June 7 at the park. A fee of $4 a person applies. Bring binoculars for the best viewing from Oakwoods' 34-foot canoe.

Tadpoles, for children ages 2 to 5, can participate in "Pond Study" featuring stories and crafts at 10 a.m. June 7 at the Nature Center. Fee is $4.

And Nature Nuts, for children ages 6 to 10, will study birds at 10 a.m. June 7. Fee is $4.

"Historical Oakwoods" is the theme of the 10 a.m. June 8 program at the nature center. Cost is $2.

And "Homeschool Monday" at 10 a.m. June 9 will feature "Turdology: The Scoop on Poop." The fee is $3 a student.

Study what's wet and wild in water samples under the microscope during "Creature Feature - Aquatic Investigation" at the Marshlands Museum and Nature Center of Lake Erie Metropark at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Fee is $2.

A "Field of Dreams Meadow Walk" is on tap at 2 p.m. Sunday. Join an interpreter for a walk on the wild side. Cost is $2.

The "Crack 'O Dawn Coffee Club" will meet at 7 a.m. June 7 at the museum for java, a doughnut and a leisurely nature walk. Donations are accepted.

Preschool- and kindergarten-age children are invited to make "Critter Contact" at 10:30 a.m. June 7. Fee is $2.

And June's "Make it at the Marsh" project will be a screened insect cage with instructions on how to raise some common butterfly larvae. Fee is $5, and the class takes place at 2 p.m. June 8. Children ages 7 to 17 can tee up with golf lessons from The First Tee of Detroit during a three-day golf camp from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 18 to 20 at the metropark.

Students will learn putting, chipping, pitching and full swing as well as rules, safety and etiquette of the game for a $110 fee.

Aspiring golfers also get a hat and T-shirt, daily snacks and an identification card. No previous golfing experience is required.

A Family Fun Festival will be held through Sunday at St. John Lutheran Church, 13115 Telegraph Road, Taylor.

The event will include rides, games and special dinners each night. A marketplace vendor show is set for 5 to 9 p.m. today, noon to 9 p.m. tomorrow and 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the school gymnasium.

Children ages 3-5 will have a chance to go for the gold during the Nursery School Olympics sponsored by Wayne County Parks and Trenton Parks and Recreation at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Elizabeth Park, Trenton.

Events will include a marshmallow shot put, diaper derby and much more. Every child will receive a participation medal.
