Trenton's annual Memorial Day Parade steps off at 10 a.m. Saturday on West Road. In addition to paying tribute to veterans of all wars, the parade also will commemorate Trenton's golden anniversary as an incorporated city.

There will be floats, color guards, bands, marching units, pipes and drums. a Wayne County Sheriff's horse patrol, community groups and a Yankee Air Museum flyover.

A memorial service at West Road and Westfield will conclude the day's activities, with the Seaway Chorale paying tribute to fallen troops and the playing of "Taps" by Jeff Thomas.

Tomorrow is Archeology Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. at the Lake Erie Metropark Marshlands Museum and Nature Center. Bring old pants, gloves and a flat trowel to assist in an archeological dig at an old house site.

It's Quilting Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Marshlands Museum and Nature Center. Bring projects, share tips and techniques.

Oakwoods Metropark's Nature Center hosts "Wildcats of Michigan" at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Learn about Michigan's fascinating feral felines, such as the bobcat, lynx and cougar. There is a $3 fee.

Holiday Canoe Tours return at 1:30 and 3 p.m. Sunday, starting at the Nature Center. There is a $3 fee per person, or $40 for a group.

Show the kids what family night at the movies used to be like next Friday at the Kennedy Recreation Center, 3101 West Road, Trenton, when there will be a drive-in movie night in the center's parking lot.

The featured attraction will be the 2006 movie "Charlotte's Web." This classic story, based on the beloved book by E.B. White is the charming tale of Fern and her friend, Wilbur the pig. Just as Wilbur's fate on the chopping block seems near, he meets a very special spider who weaves messages in her web.

The fun begins at 7:30 p.m. with pre-movie activities. The movie will begin at dusk. The drive-in movie is sponsored by the Trenton Youth Commission. Admission is free. For more information, call 1-734-675-7300.

Talented teenagers from Taylor are invited to participate in a poetry read from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday at the Sheridan Community Center, 12111 Pardee Road.

The poetry read, sponsored by Mayor Cameron Priebe's Youth Advisory Council, invites teens to read their own poetry or listen to others. Slam poetry and acoustic guitar singers are welcome.

Participation is limited to ages 13 to 19. Poems, songs or short stories can be no longer than five minutes. No swearing or graphic or foul language is allowed. And those in attendance must be respectful of other readers.

The Taylor Sportsplex, 13333 Telegraph Road, will present a Skating Stars Exhibition from 5 to 7 p.m. June 2.

Scheduled skaters include 1994 World Champion Yuko Sato, 2006 National Collegiate Junior Men's Champion Jonathan Cassar, 2007 U. S. Nationals Novice Pairs bronze medalists Jaylyn Kelley and Gabe Woodruff, 2007 U. S. National bronze medalist and 2007 International Prague Cup bronze medalists the Dearborn Crystalettes and other local skaters.

The event is a fund-raiser for 6-year-old Aleison Kowalski and her medical costs as she battles acute lymphocytic leukemia.

There will be a minimum $5 donation at the door. After the exhibition, there will be an open skate from 7 to 9 p.m. Skate rental is $2

Dearborn's 21st annual Art on the Avenue festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 2 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 3 on Monroe Street between Michigan Avenue and Morley Street.

Artwork and fine crafts from more than 60 artists will be on display for perusal and purchase. There will also be food, free live musical entertainment, free Detroit Institute of Arts art workshops and demonstrations.

The Downriver Germania Club, 23156 King Road, Brownstown Township, will host its 36th annual German American Festival from 5 p.m. to midnight next Friday and from 2 p.m. to midnight June 2.

Music will be provided by The Vagabonds and the Martin Brothers Plus 2 from 7:30 p.m. until midnight next Friday, with Millie's Czech-Slovak Band, the Berg Duo, The Harmony and Dennis Malec's International Band playing June 2.

Activities on June 2 include an afternoon Kinderparade and a moonwalk for the younger guests. A flag ceremony will take place at 8 p.m. with area German clubs and local dignitaries represented.

And of course German food, including potato pancakes, will be featured, and German beer and wines will be available in the Weinstube. Cakes and other bakery items will be available at the Konditorei (cake kitchen).

Ample parking is available and admission is $3 per person.

The sixth annual Masco Art in the Park Festival takes place June 9 and 10 at Heritage Park in Taylor.

The event features a juried art fair, a student art exhibit and quality crafters selling a wide variety of their work.

Entertainment on June 9 includes The Troubadours, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Superball, 3 to 6 p.m.; and Men in Black, 7 to 11 p.m.

On June 10, Downriver children take over the Main Stage, with the children's baking competition from 11 a.m. to noon, the children's talent competition from 12:30 to 4 p.m. and Taylor Ballet Americana and the Taylor Dance Program performing from 4 to 5 p.m.

The third annual "Cruisin' for the Arts" is scheduled for noon to 6 p.m. June 9 at the Taylor Sportsplex, 13333 Telegraph.

The classic car cruise and show are part of the Masco Masco Art in the Park Festival June 9 and 10 at Heritage Park.

Drivers should start lining up for the cruise portion of the show at noon at the Sportsplex starting at 1 p.m., the cars will cruise through midtown Taylor on Goddard Road, ending up in Heritage Park where they will be on display from 2 to 6 p.m. An awards ceremony will take place at 4 p.m.

Advance vehicle registration is $8. Registration the day of the cruise is $10. Proceeds benefit the Taylor Friends of the Arts and the Taylor Cultural Arts Commission.

Guided tours of the U.S. Brig Niagara -- a replica 1813 tall warship -- will be given from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 16 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 17 in the Port of Monroe.


Come aboard for a tour of the Niagara, a full-scale replica of a ship that fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. It is going to dock at the port of Monroe on June 16 and 17.

The tall ship's visit is one of the Monroe County Historical Society's major events to raise awareness of the upcoming War of 1812 Bicentennial. The Niagara, built in 1988, is a reconstruction of the warship aboard which Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry won the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813 during the War of 1812.

The cost is $5 per person. Children age 5 and under will be admitted for free. All of the proceeds of the Niagara's visit will be dedicated to the development of Monroe's River Raisin Battlefield site and events to celebrate the upcoming War of 1812 Bicentennial.

The ninth annual Motor City Harley Davidson Harleyfest will take place June 16 at Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights.

HarleyFest is an exciting all-day event that brings together Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts from throughout the state to celebrate great music, great food and great bikes. Bikers and non-bikers are welcome.

Admission to the festival is always free and will feature a live music stage featuring some of Detroit's hottest local bands. In addition, there will be a "Best of Bike" show for prizes in various categories, a vendor village featuring everything from clothes and jewelry to airbrush artists, plus lots of delicious food and drink, live auctions featuring autographed memorabilia, a day-long live broadcast by WRIF and more.

Gates will officially open at 11a.m.

In addition, there will be a special Harley-Davidson "Rock-n- Roll Ride for Kids," starting from Motor City Harley-Davidson, 34900 Grand River Ave., Farmington Hills, to Freedom Hill County Park. Sign-up begins at 9 a.m. The ride will leave for HarleyFest, accompanied with a police escort, at 11 a.m. sharp. Riders are asked to pay $25 per person to participate in the ride, which provides them with a special Rainbow Connection collector's pin, parking fees for HarleyFest and a donation to The Rainbow Connection. "Our Body: The Universe Within," an eye-opening and educational exhibition of actual human bodies and organs, is making its Midwest debut at The New Detroit Science Center, 5020 John R St.

Including approximately 20 bodies and 135 other anatomical displays, the exhibit exposes the inner workings of human anatomy by presenting actual human specimens, reproductions of historic anatomical artwork and much more. By presenting an artful, compelling and dignified environment, guests will be able to connect with the human artifacts on a personal level that will help them to better understand their own bodies.

The exhibition has been held over through Sept. 3. Tickets are $24.95 for adults, $22.95 for seniors and $19.95 for children, which includes Science Center general admission. Children ages 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Visitors can add the IMAX Dome Theatre film "The Human Body" for an additional $3 for adults and $2 for children and seniors with the purchase of a ticket to "Our Body: The Universe Within." Bacon Memorial District Library, 45 Vinewood, Wyandotte, hosts a drop-in chess game night from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays.

Heritage Decorative Artists of Southeast Michigan, a chapter of the International Society of Decorative Painters, meets bimonthly at the Westfield Activities Center, 2700 Westfield Road, Trenton.

Preservation Wayne is again offering walking tours through five historic districts of Detroit.

The tours take place at 10 a.m. Saturdays. Tours include downtown, the Eastern Market, midtown, auto heritage and the Cultural Center. Tours of the New Center are available by appointment.

Each tour costs $10 and takes two to three hours, looking at the area's past and present.

There are also Tuesday After Work Walking Tours at 5:30 p.m. starting from the Hotel Pontchartrain, 2 Washington Blvd. Each focuses on a different aspect of downtown — skyscrapers, restaurants and bars, sculptures and fountains or the buildings of Albert Kahn and Louis Kemper.

The evening tours are also $10 and take about two hours.

See the birthplace of the Model T, with a tour of the historic Ford Piquette Avenue Plant, 461 Piquette, Detroit.

Walk the same floors as Henry Ford, the Dodge brothers, James Couzens and other auto pioneers, where the first 10,000 Tin Lizzies were manufactured before the advent of the assembly line.

A National Historic Landmark, the Ford Piquette Avenue plant is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the first and third Saturdays of every month through October. Admission is $10, with free admission for ages 16 and under.
