The ongoing problem of school violence is the subject of The Downriver Youth Performing Arts Center's "Bang, Bang You're Dead," on stage at 7:30 p.m. May 2, 3, 9 and 10 at the Trenton Village Theatre, 2447 W. Jefferson.

The intense story follows a troubled student and the resulting violence at his school.

Admission is free for the production and includes a postperformance discussion. Due to the subject matter, it's requested that a parent accompany children younger than age 13.

Lap up some culture and possibly meet the love of your life as The Bonstelle Theatre, 3424 Woodward Ave., Detroit, presents William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" through April 27.

The famous story follows Baptista, a wealthy citizen of Padua, and her two daughters, Kate and Bianca.

"The Master Builder," playwright Henrik Ibsen's tale of guilt, love and desperation, is playing in rotating repertory through May 17 at The Hilberry Theatre in Detroit.

The tragic tale tells the story of Halvard Solness, an aging builder struggling to maintain his crumbling career while reaching out for the love of a younger woman.

Also on the bill are "As You Like It," concluding tomorrow, and "The Compleat Female Stage Beauty," running through May 9.

The final show of the theater's 45th season, "The Compleat Female Stage Beauty" deals with the changes that came about in British theater when King Charles II altered the law to allow women to act on stage.

Prices range from $20 to $30, with a buy-one, get-one-free offer on regular-priced tickets. Student rush seats are available the day of the performance for $10.

The 2007-08 season of The Theatre Ensemble's continues at Meadow Brook Theatre with the musical "Man of La Mancha" Wednesday through May 18. This play-within-a-play based on Cervantes' "Don Quixote," is the passionate and poignant tale of a noble knight who lives in a world of madness and dreams everyman's dream of seeking to find compassion, not for himself, but for others.

Finally, it's the "Nunsense Jamboree" May 28 through June 8.

After regaining her memory, Sister Amnesia realizes she is a former country singer.

Detroit Repertory Theatre's 50th anniversary season continues with "The Southern Comforts" through May 18. Gus, grouchy and set in his ways, has been a widower for some time now. One day, Amanda, a perky Southern widow, comes knocking at his door.

When a sudden thunderstorm strands Amanda in Gus's living room, the two get better acquainted. Tiny little sparks begin to fly, and romance cautiously creeps into the room.

The season concludes with the world premiere of "Moonshine Alley," May 29 through June 22. Ava Adelman, once a suburban wife and mother, and Sir Farquhar, a claimant to English peerage, live in large cardboard boxes near several upscale restaurants.

They dine on gourmet scraps, competing with a rat named Ashley for the delicacies. The bane of their existence is Peggy Dinsmore, a social worker who is determined to rescue them by moving them to a homeless shelter.

The hit Broadway musical "A Year With Frog and Toad" comes to the Meadow Brook Music Festival at 2 p.m. April 27.

Based on a book series, the family-friendly show follows two mismatched friends — a cheerful Frog and a grumpy Toad — through life's adventures.
