MUSIC TO YOUR EARS



The Henry Ford Community College Fine Arts and Fitness Division will present its Spring Jazz Concert at 8 p.m. Monday in the Pavilion Courtyard near the Student and Culinary Arts Center on HFCC's main campus, 5101 Evergreen Road, Dearborn.

The concert will showcase the jazz and big-band inspired sounds of HFCC's music program, which is the largest two-year collegiate music program in Michigan. The four ensembles scheduled to perform are HFCC's Big Band, Blue Fusion, Midnight Blue and Studio 110 Jazz Orchestra.

Pianist Justin Rito will give a recital at 3 p.m. April 22 at the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church, 7925 Horsemill Road, Grosse Ile.

A 2004 graduate of Grosse Ile High School and a junior at Alma College, Rito is an accomplished, award-winning musician. Most recently, he was the guest soloist with the Alma Symphony Orchestra after winning its 2006 piano concerto competition.

The program will include two works by Schubert, one by Chopin and "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Mussorgsky.

Free will offerings will be accepted to benefit the Young Adults' 2007 Mission Trip to New Orleans.

The Seaway Chorale and Orchestra will present their 31st annual concert at the Flat Rock Community High School Auditorium, 25600 Seneca, at 7:30 p.m. May 11 and 12.

The program, directed by Aaron Kaleniecki, is called "Spring Fever," and will feature a diverse selection of tunes, including "Fly Me to the Moon," "Aquarius" and "Bohemian Rhapsody." The concert will also include songs by George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Smokey Robinson, Ray Charles, John Williams and Henry Mancini.

Grammy Award-winning pianist George Winston will perform at 8 p.m. April 20 at the River Raisin Centre for the Performing Arts, 114 S. Monroe St., Monroe.

The University Musical Society closes out the 2006-07 season with a flurry of events in April.

Two of the world's most accomplished guitarists take on 400 years of music as John Williams and John Etheridge play at 8 p.m. today at Rackham Auditorium, 915 E. Washington St., Ann Arbor.

The Jerusalem Quartet, four musicians from Israel who have played together since 1993 and developed a lively, spontaneous style, come to Rackham Auditorium at 4 p.m. tomorrow.

The Netherlands Bach Society will play Bach's Mass in B Minor, one of his most admired works, at 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 2250 E. Stadium Blvd., Ann Arbor.

Chicago's Trinity Irish Dance Company comes to the Power Center, 121 Fletcher St., Ann Arbor, at 8 p.m. April 20 and 21. Tickets range from $18 to $40.

The group will give a one-hour "family performance" at 1 p.m. April 21. Tickets are $16 for adults, $8 for children.

Los Folkloristas bring the music of Latin America to Rackham Auditorium at 4 p.m. April 22. The seven-member group plays with over 100 instruments, including things like dried butterfly cocoons, turtle shells and a Yaqui water drum.

The Bill Lucas Quartet, makes its debut at Jazz Club at The Max at 8 and 10 p.m. today in The Music Box at the Max M. Fisher Music Center, 3711 Woodward Ave., Detroit.

Born and raised in metropolitan Detroit, Bill Lucas is an active member of the freelance, jazz and chamber music communities. He has appeared as a jazz soloist in many popular jazz clubs and nightspots of Vail, Colo., as well as at the Detroit and Montreux, Switzerland, jazz festivals.

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra and special guest vocalist Dee Daniels will perform a "Ray Charles Tribute" at 8:30 p.m. today and tomorrow; and at 3 p.m. Sunday in Orchestra Hall at the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

Superheroes will help the Detroit Symphony Orchestra close out the current season of "Super Saturdays at The Max," when the X-Men join the DSO for the final National City Young People's Concerts of the 2006-07 season at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. April 21 in Orchestra Hall at the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

With the help of powerful music, favorite X-Men characters will battle evil and show how important it is to celebrate our differences.

Meanwhile, at 10:30 a.m. in The Music Box at The Max, the Eletfa Hungarian Folk Band will introduce little ones, ages 3 to 6, to the rich culture of Hungary through song, dance, narration and demonstrations.

One of world music's most legendary artists, sitar virtuoso and composer Ravi Shankar, will make his debut in Orchestra Hall at the Max M. Fisher Music Center at 8 p.m. April 21.

Shankar appears in concert with his daughter, Anoushka Shankar, also a sitarist and the youngest person ever to be nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of World Music. Also performing are Tanmoy Bose and Kenji Ota.

One of today's most celebrated and beloved pianists, Andre Watts returns to Orchestra Hall to celebrate his 60th birthday and the 50th anniversary of his professional debut at 3 p.m. April 22.

Fort Street Chorale & Chamber Orchestra will perform Bach's B minor Mass, at 3 p.m. May 6 at historic Fort Street Presbyterian Church, 631 W. Fort, Detroit.

Described as "transcendental" and "a summation of a lifetime of work," the B minor Mass is also is known as one of the most demanding compositions ever written for singers. Bach created the mass over more than two decades. Although blind, he finished copying the work in 1749, just a year before his death. It would be nearly a century before large-scale performances of the entire mass would be staged.

Pop music icon Billy Joel will perform at The Palace of Auburn Hills at 8 p.m. May 4.

Michigan Opera Theatre has three shows coming up at the Detroit Opera House, 1526 Broadway.
