GALLERY HOPPING

The Southgate Cultural Commission is sponsoring an art show from 5 to 9 p.m. March 23 at City Hall, 14400 Dix-Toledo Road.

The Cultural Commission is looking for artists who would like to showcase their talents at this event. The entry fee is $10, and tables and chairs will be provided. Artists can also bring their own easels or screens, as need be.

All types of art are welcome, including sculpture, paintings, drawings, photography, pottery, handweaving, basketry, as well as handcrafted jewelry (no prefabricated jewelry)

During the event, light refreshments will be served and there will be a harpist playing for the enjoyment of all.

For more information or an application form, call 1-734-282-7798 or 1-734-281-6981

The Downriver Council for the Arts Home Gallery, 20904 North Line Road, Taylor, is offering a program called "Tot Arts," or "TarTs," a series of five fun classes designed specifically for 3- and 4-year-olds to encourage the love of reading and art.

The classes will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays from March 7 to April 4 at the gallery.

Artist and retired art teacher Andrea Irwin will teach the class, which includes stories and art projects related to the stories. The children will work with paint, glue and any number of other media and should come dressed accordingly.

Class size is limited to 10 students per class. Students must be registered before the first class Wednesday to participate. No registrations will be accepted after the first week of class. The $40 registration fee includes the five-class series, materials and a TarTs T-shirt.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and noon - 3 p.m. Saturdays. For more information, call 1-734-287-6103.

River's Edge Gallery, 3024 Biddle Ave., Wyandotte, presents "Loveart," featuring artwork, handmade cards, coloring books, hand-painted furniture and paper weavings by Irene Will and Pietro Di Giorgio's new book of poetry, "Lover's Walk."

Meanwhile, the gallery has three more exhibitions running simultaneously.

On the first floor is a collection of photorealistic wildlife oil paintings by Nancy Byrum.

Byrum's technique creates images of animals that look as though they could leap or fly right off the canvas.

On the gallery's mezzanine level, "Kindred Spirits" shows works by the late Arnold Dreifuss and the late Jim Slack.

Jim Slack's "Flyboy" and other works by him and Arnold Dreifuss are on display in "Kindred Spirits" at River's Edge Gallery.

Slack, founder of River's Edge Gallery, used a series of paintings that reflected aspects of his life. He also was a poet, and examples of both his art and poetry are in the exhibit.

Dreifuss was a community activist whose work consisted of primitive figures in a surrealistic world. He held a doctorate in education and psychology, and his paintings were metaphors based on his patients' dreams.

On the third floor, the two halves of Patricia Izzo's "20/20" exhibition that have been showing concurrently at River's Edge and Arianna Gallery in Royal Oak come together as "20 Plus 20."

The exhibitions will run through next Friday.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call 1-734-246-9880 or visit www.artattheedge.com

Biddle Gallery, 2840 Biddle Ave., Wyandotte, is running "The Home Show," through Tuesday, featuring handmade furniture, pottery, glass, paintings, sculpture, clocks, tile and other home accessories by nearly 100 Michigan artists, including David Scherer, Jeri Hollister, Rosalyn Tyge, Rick Pruckler, MuNiMuLa, Susan Morosky, Graceann Warn and Motawi Tileworks.

The gallery also is showing pottery by Elenor Wilson. Her porcelain and stoneware pottery made for everyday use, centerpieces and special occasions are inspired by the curves and proportions of the human body. Surface details and edges are inspired by her love of textiles, fashion and garments, accented with stitching, darting and patterns.

Gallery hours are 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturdays. Call 1-734-281-4779 or visit www.biddlegallery.com.
