THE GOLDEN COMPASS — The fantasy adventure is set in an alternative world where Lyra (Dakota Blue Richards), a 12-year-old girl who starts out trying to rescue a kidnapped friend, winds up on an epic quest to save not only her world, but ours, as well. Rated PG-13 (New Line Cinema). MJR

THE GREAT DEBATERS — Professor Melvin Tolson (Denzel Washington), a brilliant debate team coach, shapes a group of underdog students from a small African American college in the deep south into a historically elite debate team to take on Harvard's championship team. HITMAN — Known only as Agent 47 (Tim Olyphant), he's a professional assassin for hire, and becomes the hunted when he gets caught up in a political takeover. Rated R (Twentieth Century Fox). AP

I AM LEGEND — For three years, Robert Neville (Will Smith), the last human survivor of an attack of a mysterious virus in New York City and maybe the world, has scavenged for food and supplies and sent out radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors. Rated PG-13 (Warner Bros.). MJR, AMC

JUNO — Juno (Ellen Page) is a whip-smart teen confronting an unplanned pregnancy by her classmate (Michael Cera).Rated PG-13 (Fox Searchlight ). MJR

MR. MAGORIUM'S WONDER EMPORIUM — Mr. Magorium's (Dustin Hoffman) magic toy store is where everything in it comes to life, including the store itself. Rated G (Fox Walden). AP

NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS — When a missing page from the diary of John Wilkes Booth surfaces, treasure hunter Ben Gates' (Nicolas Cage) great-great grandfather is implicated as a key conspirator in Abraham Lincoln's death. Rated PG (Walt Disney Pictures). MJR, AMC

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN — Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) finds a pickup truck surrounded by a sentry of dead men with a load of heroin and 2 million dollars in cash in the back and sets off a chain reaction of catastrophic violence when he takes it. Rated R (Miramax). MJR

ONE MISSED CALL — Beth Raymond (Shannyn Sossamon) witnesses the gruesome deaths of two friends just days apart. Both of them had received cell phone messages of their own horrifying last moments before they died. Rated PG-13 (Warner Bros.). MJR, AMC

THE POLAR EXPRESS 3D — Based on Chris Van Allsburg's book and with Tom Hanks as the conductor, this computer-animated film tells of a doubting young boy who takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole and embarks on a journey of self-discovery. IMAX
