University of Michigan composer and 2001 MacArthur Foundation Genius Award recipient Bright Sheng conducts his opera-theater work "The Silver River" at 8 p.m. Jan. 12 and 13 at The Power Center, 121 Fletcher St., Ann Arbor.

The 75-minute work is a retelling of a 4,000-year-old Chinese creation myth, integrating Western and Chinese opera, drama and contemporary dance, and features a solo performance on the pipa, a Chinese lute.
